SERVICE ONE® and NHC Partnership

4 April 2016 |Do Good Fund

A partnership between SERVICE ONE and National Health Co-operative will deliver four new health clinics to service 20,000 locals across the outer metro region of Canberra.

As part of the Alliance Bank® group, SERVICE ONE aims to create positive social change through the investment of profits into initiatives that benefit its members and their communities.

The NHC partnership  will see SERVICE ONE invest $1.5m of grant funding over four years. This will deliver four new centres in areas closely aligned to SERVICES ONE’s member base.

Under the collaboration NHC members can access SERVICE ONE products and services at discounted prices, special offers and free access to financial literacy sessions. SERVICE ONE members and their families can access NHC membership at a heavily reduced rate removing barriers to gain access to unlimited bulk billed GP and medical health services. It also offers members access to free health education sessions. Several sessions have been hosted thus far and others have been scheduled based on broader health awareness weeks and the more pressing health issues in the operating area for the two organisations.

Importantly, the arrangement gives SERVICE ONE the ability to communicate to the NHC member network and the two organisations are working together to see a significant proportion of NHC members utilise SERVICE ONE for their banking and finance needs. Since the partnership was announced SERVICE ONE has experienced steady member and banking business growth.

The NHC began in 2004 when a group of concerned residents formed a steering committee to address concerns about the lack of affordable GP’s and health services in disadvantaged areas of the outer metro Canberra. A primary target of six suburbs housing 22,000 people was identified. Following extensive community assessment, service delivery testing, a positive feasibility report and some initial funding commitments, the West Belconnen Health Co-operative Ltd was established in 2006.

Set-up of the first centre was achieved through a partnership between the community, governments (Australian and ACT) and businesses. The models viability is achieved through bulk-billed Medicare rebates, fee-for other services and rental income from co-located services. At December 2015 NHC community-owned centres had 30,000 members and this is expected to reach 50,000 by June 2017.

SERVICE ONE and the NHC are working closely together to identify areas that can benefit from additional GP services and are looking into the potential of co-leased sites (from which both SERVICE ONE and the NHC will operate).
