Giving Back
They chose to become B Corp certified because they beleive in the philosophy that business should be a force for good and their business strategy reflects this. Understanding the needs of their community has seen the implementation of a host of programs:
Apprentice Support Program
Interest free loans of up to $5,000 for apprentices to buy the tools of their trade, along with financial literacy support and professional mentoring.
“BDCU has my back. Their interest-free loan and affordable repayments mean I’ve less to think about – so I can focus on learning my trade and being the best I can be. I’m only starting out, but they see the potential in me – and that feels good!” Hayden Wallace, Member
The Collective
Local business hubs in Goulburn and Mittagong that incorporate public spaces and amenities, co-working spaces and offices for SMEs, professional mentoring and business community support systems.
Within the Collective in Goulburn and in the centre at Bowral, BDCU has partnered with two cafes and re-introduced vocational training to the community in partnership with an accredited training organisation to train hospitality apprentices - (In response to the withdrawal of TAFE services from the area). This provides trainees with the experience they need to achieve accreditation and supports them within their local community.
New Business Incubator
The program was developed in partnership with Goulburn Connect, a shared community/business partnership attracting federal funding, to support local start-ups. It provides seed funding and an education program for local business conducted within the Collective Goulburn. It also facilitates business networking and allows start-ups to benefit from the shared experience and knowledge accumulated within local businesses and the local Chamber of Commerce.
Community Partner Program
Includes a My Community Savings account that allows members to nominate and support a community partner from a list of registered local charities, community groups, schools and other local organisations. For every $1 of interest earned by the member BDCU donates 15 cents from its own capital to the members’ nominated charity.
